Compounds Containing the Terminal Fluorodinitromethyl Group, IV. 4-Fluoro-4,4-dinitrobutyric Acid.

Abstract

The 4-fluoro-4,4-dinitrobutyric acid compound was prepared by the sequence: tetranitromethane (TNM) to nitroform to methyl 4,4,4-trinitrobutyrate (IV) to potassium methyl 4,4-dinitrobutyrate (III) to methyl 4-fluoro-4,4-dinitrobutyrate (I) to 4-fluoro-4,4-dinitrobutyric acid (II). Process development in the KI reduction of IV to III is described. The aqueous fluorination technique is used to convert III to I. Over-all yields of II from TNM are 35-40%. It is believed that this represents a practicable and economical method for the manufacture of II. (Author)
