UNDERWATER TARGET CLASSIFICATION (U)

Abstract

Research efforts performed during 1961 are described which include data obtained from pattern recognition and echo amplitude studies and the application of these data to methods used to determine and study echo amplitude patterns from three submarine model targets. The effectsARE GIVEN OF DIFFERENT MODEL CONSTRUCTIONS ON THE ECHO AMPLITUDE PATTERNS AND PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF VOLUME AND REVERBERATION STUDIES ARE PRESENTED. The discussion of the passive classification phase presents the results of data analyses of a number of NOL tapes containing tracking data related to the investigation. Also presented are the results of manual analyses, including the extraction of doppler information, and a limited number of computer-programmed analyses. An unclassified report is appended which describes the work of General Dynamics/Electronics - Rochester in the area of Pattern Recognition by the Adaptive Networks Technique. (Author)
