Synthesis of a Control System for Automatic Maneuvering of Submarines.

Abstract

The synthesis of an automatic maneuvering and keeping system for submarine application is described. It is an extension of work performed earlier in the area of ship control which is summarized in Report No. U417-61-005 (AD- 274 549) entitled Alternative Autopilot Configurations forAutomatic Submarine Control. The detailed procedures for synthesis of the depth control system and course control system are discussed individually with analytical expressions for the various systems gains given as the ultimate result. Techniques for limiting pitch angle and course rate during a maneuver are presented. A unique scheme for elimination of control reversal is also described. The performance of the system was evaluated for combined maneuvers and as a keeping device for the SSB(N)608. The results of the evaluation are included in graphical form. (Author)
