The Determination of the Taft Sigma - Value for the Fluorodinitromethyl Group.
Abstract
From the rate of reaction of 4,4-dinitro-4 fluorobutyric acid with diphenyldiazomethane, the *-value of the fluorodinitromethyl group was found to be 4.38. This appears to be the second largest *-value recorded for an elec trically neutral group; the largest being that of the trinitromethyl group ( * 4.54). The ionization constant of 4,4-dinitro-4-fluoro butyric acid calculated from the *-value above was found to be in excellent agreement with the experimentally determined valu. (Author)
