REPORT TO THE SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR. HULL RESPONSE AND SHOCK MOTION-DISCUSSION AND ANALYSIS

Abstract

This report analyzes and interprets the results obtained and reported by Project 3.2 in WT-1023 (to be published). The shock motion of hull structures and simulated equipments of the submerged targets is discussed. The measured rigid body axial motion of the submerged SQUAWs is compared with the computed response of a cylinder subjected to an exponential pressure pulse. The general features of the shock motion of the surfaced targets are compared with the computed particle velocity of the surface water. The variation of shock motion of surface targets with horizontal range is discussed. Equipment damage to submerged and surfaced vessels is inferred from the analyzed measurements and compared with that from conventional explosive tests. It is concluded that submarines at a horizontal range of 7200 ft will be outside the surfacing-damage (severe equipment damage) range. Surface ships at a horizontal range of 5400 ft will receive light but widespread damage; at 7700 ft, damage will be inappreciable. (Author)
