Research in Fluorine Chemistry.

Abstract

The interhalogen compound chlorine pentafluoride was synthesized by electrochemical techniques from the HF-NaF-ClF3 system. This synthesis has been studied as a function of current density, concentration of chlorine trifluoride, and the presence of impurities; it is capable of con tinuous operation. Other electrochemical means to obtain ClF5 are discussed. Evidence is presented in favor of a ClF5 formation mechanism which depends upon the reaction of electrochemi cally generated 'active' fluorine with ClF3. An infrared technique for the semiquantitative determination of the concentration of ClF5 is given. (Author)
