INTERIM IBDA CAPABILITIES OF STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND

Abstract

The participation of the Strategic Air Command in Operation UPSHOT-KNOTHOLE had as primary objec tives the test and development of current capa bility for indirect bomb damage assessment, the establishment of standing operating procedures and training requirements to achieve maximum proficiency in indirect bomb damage assessment procedures, and the familiarization and indoctri nation of Strategic Air Command crews in atomic operations. In general, these objectives were achieved. The major conclusion is that available equipment has the latent capability for obtaining indirect bomb damage assessment data if suffi cient training is accomplished and if standing operating procedures are prepared and applied. On the basis of the Strategic Air Command's participation tentative standing operating pro cedures have been prepared and a training program has been established. In order to refine further the standing operating procedures and to evaluate the established training program a recommendation is made that the Strategic Air Command be in cluded in future atomic tests on a large scale.
