Technical Photography.

Abstract

The technical photography on Operation Hardtack included recording the visible aspects of all detonations. The work was performed as a service to the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, and the Department of Defense. Automatically operated photostations on both Bikini and Eniwetok Atolls were maintained, in addition instrumented shipboard and aircraft stations for the underwater and high-altitude events. Complete processing and analysis facilities were maintained on Parry Island; and final reports were issued in the field containing the fireball yield calculations for all LASL and LRL sponsored events except Shot Fig. Results obtained for the DOD and for Project 18.1 (Operation Newsreel, Johnston Island) will be reported directly to the experimenters. This report contains a general summary of the photographic effort and a detailed discussion of the methods and results pertinent to the Project 15.1 fireball photography. Tabulations of all Hardtack projection prints and the station data sheets for all photostations on detonations at EPG and at Johnston Island are included. (Author)
