SONAR SELF NOISE IN SUBMARINES

Abstract

Measurements of sonar self-noise in domes and in hydrophone arrays in submarines were carried out over a period of several years. The results of such trials received in A.U.W.E. before the end of 1961 are collated and summarized in this report. The measurements are presented in tab ular form as a comparison of the level in the noisiest octave in the noisiest half-array with the Admiralty noise target level. The interfer ence due to machines individually and in groups is discussed in detail. An overall summary of the self-noise status of modern R.N. submarines is given.
