SUPERCONDUCTING GYROSCOPE BREADBOARD DEVELOPMENT.

Abstract

This report covers the results of an effort to develop a superconducting free gyroscope (breadboard model). It has been prepared in two parts: Part I contains a comparatively general description of all aspects of the program; Part II (Appendices) elaborates on the technical pro blems involved. The major objective of this program was the development of a breadboard model incorporating the following fuctions: a magnetic support system for the superconducting rotor; provision for rotor spinup and coast in a vacuum; provision for cooling of the operating parts and for mounting of these parts in an envelope compatible with the requirements of the gyro test program; Semi-automatic readout. Aireas of work covered during the course of the program were: superconducting support system; superconductive spin motor; manual and semi-automatic readout system; thermal considerations; test fixtures and methods; factors affecting gyro performance; gyroscope testing.
