TERRIER GUIDED MISSILE LAUNCH SYSTEM, MARK 10 MAGAZINE SAFETY TEST: EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF A BURNING TERRIER MARK 30 SUSTAINER ON ADJACENTLY STOWED TERRIER AND ASROC MISSILES
Abstract
A test was conducted to evaluate the hazards created by an inadvertent ignition of a Terrier Mark 30 sustainer in a GMLS Mark 10 magazine in which ASROC and Terrier rounds are stowed in alternate positions in the magazine ready service rings. In this test a Terrier Mark 30 sustainer was electrically ignited so that the exhaust impingement and heat effect on adjacent Terrier and ASROC rounds could be studied. From the results of the test it was concluded that the Terrier Mark 30 sustainer creates a greater potential hazard than the Mark 7 sustainer when ignited in the magazine. However, the safety systems, which included a fast acting sprinkling system and means of restraining the Terrier missiles independent of the normal attachment to the boosters, proved capable of restricting the casualty to burning of the ignited sustainer and mated booster. On the basis of the test results it is recommended that provisions be made to restrain the missiles in the magazine independent of booster restraint and that the Terrier magazine sprinkler system be changed to the new faster acting system with the mid-round sprinkler heads relocated to provide more effective cooling in the missile-to-booster mating area.
