Hydrolysis of Bis(2-Fluoro-2,2-Dinitroethyl) formal. Laboratory Method of Preparation of 2-Fluoro-2,2-Dinitroethanol.

Abstract

It was foucc;al the formal equilibrium could be reversed by heating bis(2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroethyl)formal, FEFO, with sulfuric acid and water which had been put on an inert substrate of silica gel. The rate of hydrolysis of the FEFO to yield 2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroethanol was followed by removing aliquots of the reaction mixture and analyzing the aliquot on the gas chromatograph. The hydrolysis was effected by heating the mixture at 130 degrees from five to eight hours. The fluoroalcohol was distilled from the mixture and the silica gel reused. The recoveries of the 2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroethanol ranged from 80 to 95%. (Author)
