MINIMIZING ESCORT GROUPS FOR MERCHANT SHIP CONVOYS

Abstract

A revised Atlantic Ocean Convoy Schedule has been developed which minimizes first the number of escort groups required and then secondarily minimizes the number of merchant ships required in the pipeline to deliver specified lift requirements. By appropriate modifications in sailing intervals and the interlocking of escort group turnaround times with the turnaround times of the convoys, a total potential saving of 70 escort groups and 824 merchant ships is realizable when the specified lift requirements are delivered.
