TERMINAL GUIDANCE SIMULATOR STUDY PROGRAM TEST. THE EFFECTS OF RASTER LINE NUMBERS, FRAME RATES, FIELDS-OF-VIEW SIGNAL-TO-NOISE RATIOS, AND TRANSPARENCIES OF REPRESENTATIVE TERRAIN ON OPERATOR PERFORMANCE. VOLUME I. SIMULATION TEST DATA

Abstract

The work described in this report was designed to explore the effect Raster Line number, Frame Rates, Fields-of-View, Signal to Noise Ratios, and Transparencies of representative terrain, have on operator performance. It is an exploration of the main effects, simple interactions, and higher order interactions of these variables with respect to the operator's performance. The 5 subjects were briefed with regard to the various changes that could be expected in the displayed image with which they would be working. Specific briefing materials for each of the 3 transparencies used consisted of a vertical photograph of the general area containing the target and an enlargement of the area immediately surrounding the target area. The test included: Information Frame Rates of 30, 10, and 3 frames/sec, Raster Lines 729, 243 and 81, Fieldsof-View 15, 10 and 5 sq mi, Signal-to-Noise Ratios of 0, 8, 15 and 20 db. Each subject was exposed to each transparency, each Raster Line number, each Frame Rate, each Signal-to-Noise Ratio, and each Field-of-View an equal number of times. The test results were scored on the basis of miss distance. (Author)
