LARGE SCALE SAMPLE DROP TESTING OF CASTABLE PLASTIC BONDED EXPLOSIVES

Abstract

Tests of twelve thin-walled charge containers loaded with seven varied compositions of plastic bonded explosives indicate that five of the seven compositions can sustain, without an explosive or burning reaction, impact of a 336 lb studded weight dropped from a height of at least five feet. The tests conducted offer only limited statistical assurance of exlosive insensitivity due to the small number of samples evaluated. Two compositions were observed to detonate with a drop height of five feet. (Author)
