RESEARCH IN FLUORINE CHEMISTRY

Abstract

This report describes results obtained on the electrochemical synthesis of chlorine pentafluoride from the HF-NaF-Cl2 system. The results of synthetic studies carried out in an electrolytic cell and of studies on electrode materials are presented. These results are discussed and interpreted with particular reference to electrode reactions. Studies were carried out which resulted in an improvement in the reproducibility of the synthesis, shed some light on the behavior of the gas electrode, and clarified some of the effects of impurities. A probable mechanism, which is consistent with the experimental results and is based on ClF3 as an intermediate in the electrochemical formation of ClF5, is presented. (Author)
