RESEARCH IN FLUORINE CHEMISTRY

Abstract

This report summarizes and interprets the results of a research program on the electrochemical synthesis of chlorine pentafluoride (ClF5) from chlorine trifluoride and from chlorine. The experimental conditions and the equipment are described, and details of the approach, which combined the techniques of synthetic inorganic chemistry and electrochemistry, are given. Hypotheses were developed to explain the observed phenomena, particularly with regard to reactions occurring at the anode. These reactions were studied by the galvanostatic method and with the aid of a polarization curve tracer. The curve tracer is described, together with a transistorized electrometer voltmeter which was used for electrode potential measurements. (Author)
