Heat Resistant Explosives XVIII. Recrystallization Techniques for Dipam

Abstract

The recrystallization of 3,3'-diamino-2,2',4,4', 6,6'- hexanitrobiphenyl, DIPAM, from a series of two-solvent systems was studied. Mixtures of tetrahydrofuran-toluene and tetrahydrofurancarbon tetrachloride gave the best results. Using standard, as well as special continuous extraction techniques, the bulk density of crystalline DIPAM may be controlled over a wide range from 0.26 g/ml to 0.77 g/ml.
