FACT CORRELATION FOR INTELLIGENCE ANALYSIS. VOLUME 2. ANALYSIS OF TECHNICAL PROBLEMS

Abstract

This report presents an analysis of the requirements for a Fact Correlation System--a specialized information storage and retrieval system oriented to the problem of correlating facts for intelligence analysis. Two aspects of the problem were analyzed: the equipment requirements necessary to implement a highly automated system, and the processing requirements necessary to transmute isolated items of information into an integral whole. The report includes a broad review and survey of existing processing techniques, primarily in the fields of linguistic analysis and adaptive learning, and a survey of both existing and experimental data processing equipment. This survey and analysis form the basis for a research plan for developing the techniques and equipment required to correlate facts automatically. Design principles and exploratory research were reviewed to anticipate possible areas of directed research activity for improving system operations.
