Abstract

In recent years, the reduction of ships wave resistance has received renewed attention. From such research better techniques for directly measuring wave resistance are being attained as well as improved approaches on the problem of reducing wave resistance. Much of the current work on reducing wave drag centers on the use of an enlarged bulbous bow or the delineation of a ship with a special hull contour. In this report, results of analytical and experimental research to date on another approach for reducing wave drag is presented. This concept is based on allowing the approach flow to enter the bow. Results show it is possible by this method to reduce appreciably the wave resistance over a wide range of ship speeds. (Author)
