RESEARCH ON THE PROJECTION OF MULTILAYERED FRAGMENTS

Abstract

This report describes a research program directed toward developing methods for explosive acceleration of multiple fragment layers to a uniform velocity. Seven methods which achieve such velocity uniformity in varying degrees are described. Other aspects of these methods which received attention included fragment density in the fragment cloud, fragment velocity, fragment cloud growth rate, and damage to fragments. Appendices are included which discuss theoretical calculations of the performance of one method, special instrumentation developed and used during the project, and fabrication methods for the fragment pack. A final appendix gives a complete listing of the shots fired during the project.
