RADIANT ENERGY DELIVERED PRIOR TO THE FIRST MINIMUM

Abstract

The purpose of this phase of Project 8.4 was the measurement of the radiant energy delivered prior to the first minimum using a calorimeter of improved sensitivity and time response. These measurements were to be made for two detonations, one device detonated at an altitude of approximately 36,600 ft mean sea level and the other, a correlation shot, a similar device, detonated at approximately 5,000 ft. These data were to be combined with measurements of the total radiant energy to determine the percentage of radiant energy delivered prior to the first minimum for each detonation. These data are of particular importance in the theoretical studies on the partition of bomb energy between the two pulses as a function of altitude. The measurements to be discussed in this report were to be backup for the bolometer measurement of radiant power versus time from which basic information required could more readily be obtained.
