AIRBOATS

Abstract

The purpose of this evaluation was to determine if the use of airboats (Susquehanna Skimmer and Hurricane Aircat) would increase the capability of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) to intercept insurgent forces operating in inundated areas of aquatic grasses off of established waterways. Data were collected by observers participating in operations, and through the use of interview and questionnaire techniques. There was insufficient time to accomplish necessary training and make an adequate evaluation of the airboats since they arrived late in the 1964 rainy season. The operational missions undertaken were confined largely to established waterways and involved patrolling, escorting, and troop movement. It was tentatively concluded that the Hurricane Aircat boat, with modifications, meets the requirements of the Commander, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. Further evaluating should be made during the 1965 rainy season to develop and evaluate all aspects of airboat operation. (Author)
