ANNEX A (SEARCHLIGHTS) TO ADDENDUM, MECHANIZED RIFLE TROOP (M-113)

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to evaluate 12-inch searchlights mounted on M-113's in counterinsurgency operations in the Republic of Vietnam. Six commercial searchlights, with mounts designed by the Limited War Laboratory, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Mayland, were mounted on M-113's of the 6th Armored Cavalry Squadron of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) located at MyTho, South Vietnam. Data used in the evaluation were obtained by observation and by interviewing commanders and US advisors who employed the equipment in combat operations. The searchlights proved useful for night reconnaissance and for examination of possible ambush locations. The requirement for logistical support was minimal. Searchlight controls, however, were located in such a position that they could not be operated by the gunner. (Author)
