TRANSITIONS IN THE LFT-10 GAS GENERATOR

Abstract

The thermal behavior of the gas generator propellant, LFT-10, was investigated by means of dilatometry, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis, and compared with the behavior of pure ammonium nitrate and a eutectic mixture of ammonium nitrate and guanidine nitrate. The metastable transition between forms IV and II of the ammonium nitrate oxidizer in the LFT-10 is observed between 50 and 52 C, but the IV approaching III transition is observed between 40 and 50 C in the other samples. The growth problems obtained in the aging of LFT-10 at 74 C are explained on the basis of these observations. A detailed account of the dilatometric procedure is also given.
