PERFORMANCE OF AN RFD BACKGROUND DISCRIMINATION SYSTEM

Abstract

A complementary reticle system, with two Rotating Field Detectors was successfully tested against simulated backgrounds and targets. Reduction in background signal levels of better than one order of magnitude were demonstrated. Analytical descriptions of system performance were derived and evaluated for simple geometries. These descriptions permit the a priori estimation of system performance against a given background. The application of the automatic background compensation (ABC) circuit to the RFD system is shown to have discrimination advantages different from those afforded by the complementary reticle system. The combination of the automatic background compensation system and the complementary reticle system is expected to provide a highly effective discrimination capability. (Author)
