POLARIS

Abstract

The major objective of this program is to obtain experimental information on the growth of the turbulent wake behind hypersonic bodies of various geometries. It is known that for long distances downstream behind bodies the behavior of the hypersonic wake is markedly different from a low speed incompressible wake. Sufficiently far behind the body, however, all wakes behave in the same way. It was desired to determine for the various bodies at what distances behind the body the asymptotic low speed characteristics appear. The bodies chosen for this program were 9, 16, 24, and 40 degree halfangle cones designed with a constant drag coefficient-reference area product, and spheres. Tests were planned at Mach number 10.
