HUMAN FACTOR PROBLEMS IN ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE. DEGREE OF SIMULATION DESIRABLE IN ASW TRAINERS.
Abstract
Simulation in ASW trainers is considered from seven points of view: performance characteristics of the ASW vehicles; environmental conditions in the ASW vehicles; sensor and weapon capabilities; sonar conditions and their effects on sound transmission; effects of controls and display of target signals; communications requirements; representativeness of problems. The degree of simulation desirable in each of these areas is considered to vary as a function of the purpose of the trainer. Trainers designed to emphasize search, detection and classification require a different pattern of emphasis from those designed for target localization and fire control. It is contended that many current ASW trainers do not reflect this distinction and, as a consequence, are both more expensive and less effective than they should be. (Author)
