MOHAWK AIRCRAFT IN THE TARGET ACQUISITION ROLE

Abstract

During the period 1 August - 31 October 1963, the Army Concept Team in Vietman (ACTIV) conducted an evaluation of the 23d Special Warfare Aviation Detachment (SWAD) in the role of target acquisition support for counterinsurgency operations. The 23d SWAD, equipped with 6 Mohawk aircraft, was employed in accordance with US Army doctrine with flight teams employed in direct support of Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) divisions. Data collected on combat support missions flown and reports submitted by supported unit advisors during the reporting period are contained in this report. The results of this evaluation uphold findings and conclusions reported in previous ACTIV Mohawk reports. Furthermore, this evaluation clearly shows that the 23d SWAD is capable of providing valuable and responsive target acquisition support of counterinsurgency operations. (Author)
