PROXIMITY FUZE SYMPOSIUM 16, 17 APRIL 1956.

Abstract

A symposium was held at the Diamond Ordnance Fuze Laboratories on 17 and 18 April 1956 to present a brief summary of developments in the proximity fuzing of bombs, rockets, and mortar shells to representatives of the Department of Defense and its Agencies. The agenda for the meering is herein presented, followed by the papers essentially as they were given, but with minor changes necessitated by the omission of explanations that sometimes accompanied slides. The history of the VT fuze, and the types that have been developed were discussed, along with capabilities, limitations, and potential nonexplosive applications. Methods of improving the reliability and countermeasures protection of radio VT fuzes were covered, including pulsed, FM, and multiple-fuze systems. Also described were recent developments in nonradio VT fuzing, various types of power supplies, oscillator tubes, and safety and arming systems developed to meet specific needs, as well as the methods and facilities used by DOFL in both laboratory and field testing of fuzes and components.
