OPERATION CROSSROADS. FAILURES OF MASTS, YARDARMS, BOOMS AND RIGGING

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to record factual data obtained in the field on failures of masts, booms, yardarms and rigging. A discussion of the characteristics of the blast wave which acted on the masts and other items is contained in the overall report on superstructures and should be studied before any analysis of the material contained herein is attempted. The ships covered by this report are: Arkansas, Nevada; Independence, Pensacola, Salt Lake City, Prinz Eugen, Sakawa, Ralph Talbot, Rhind, Hughes, Crittenden, Dawson, Brule, and the submarine Skate. No other failures occurred affecting the subject matter of this report. (Author)
