ANNEX B (FLAMETHROWERS) TO ADDENDUM, MECHANIZED RIFLE TROOP (M-113).
Abstract
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the M-132 self-propelled flame-thrower for use in counterinsurgency in the Republic of Vietnam (RVN). The flamethrower units, mounted in Mp113 armored personnel carriers (APC), were attached to armored cavalry squadrons operating in the III and IV Corps tactical zones in (RVN). Flamethrowers were employed in combat eight times during the evaluation. Data collected through interviews revealed the flamethrowers were extremely useful when employed against dug-in Viet Cong (VC) positions, particularly when the positions were in dense thickets or scrub growth. The flamethrowers were practicularly effective when employed in pairs and maintenance and logistical problems were minimal. One of the M-4 flamethrower service units was deadlined throughout the evaluation. It is recommended that the M-132 and the later model M-4A2 flamethrower service unit, mounted in the M-113 APC, be introduced into the Military Assistance Program (MAP) and issued on the basis of four M-132's and two M4A2 service units, for each armored cavalry squadron.
