SOME MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CARBITRON REINFORCED SOLID PROPELLANT GRAIN.
Abstract
Model cylindrical grains were constructed by the CARBITRON process and tested both hydrostatically and ballistically to demonstrate pressure bearing capability. An inert formulation was developed to approximate the mechanical properties of an active propellant. Results are shown for 45 hydrostatic pressurization tests conducted on active and inert reinforced cylindrical grain models using a novel test device. Results of four similar ballistic tests are shown and discussed. Hydrostatic and ballistic pressurization test results are compared with results of a company funded stress analysis computer program, showing good correlation between experimental and predicted results. The flexural strength and deflection of reinforced propellant beams, determined as functions of temperature and cross head rate, and strand burning rates for a reinforced propellant are given.
