DIRECT CONTACT DETONATION EXPLOSIVES SENSITIVITY TESTS.

Abstract

The sensitivities of four new and three standard well-known explosives were studied and compared in the newly developed direct contact detonation explosives sensitivity test system. In this system, pressure pulses of known and controlled amplitude and of controlled duration, are delivered to the samples studied by the direct contact detonation with them of long cylinders of cardboard-confined NITROGUANIDINE. The sensitivity of the explosive studied is expressed in terms of the detonation pressure of the NITROGUANIDINE which is required for the critical detonation of the sample or in terms of the characteristics of the transmitted initiating pressure wave. The effects of loading density, size, and confinement upon sensitivity and order of sensitivity were measured. The effects of explosive sample confinement by wood, aluminum, and steel were measured. The direct contact detonation sensitivities of all of the explosives tested, decrease with increasing loading densities decreasing size, and decreasing confinement. The sensitivities and the order of sensitivity of the explosives tested were found to be very sensitive to, and dramatically dependent upon loading conditions and other parameters of the system of which the explosives are a part.
