FINAL FLIGHT TEST REPORT. FLIGHT NO. 52(TV-20)1,

Abstract

The primary objective of Flight Test 52(TV-20)1 was the evaluation of the new and independently duplicate VHF Command Guidance System, LORC-1, designed for improved reliability. Release, free fall, boost, and separation were normal except for a left roll which was essentially corrected by the autopilot soon after separation. The vehicle flew essentially the desired trajectory, and the engine solenoid was actuated according to the predetermined program. The performance of the new VHF command guidance system was generally satisfactory, although several ineffectual spurious commands, arising from excessive audio distortion in a receiver, and from excessive deviation in the ground transmitter, were experienced. A modified DPN-19 duplicate beacon system, now functionally limited to tracking, and redesignated LOMB-1 was employed in this flight. Owing to arc effects caused by a pressure leak and excessive voltage, one of the two beacons failed before launch, but the remaining beacon afforded excellent tracking throughout the flight. In this flight, two Hubbard Programmers were successfully employed to perform certain auxiliary command functions, and a tuft experiment was satisfactorily conducted to investigate materials suitable for future flow studies at supersonic velocities. The automatic recovery sequence of the vehicle was achieved with excellent results. (Author)
