STUDY AND COMPARISON OF TURBOJET ENGINESZ(FOR USE WITH THE XQ-5 TARGET.)Z
Abstract
Recent requests by the Air Force to study the performance of the XQ-5 drone when equipped with various engines coupled with an investigation of the performance envelopes of missile systems presently being developed, indicate a need for a drone with intermediate performance characteristics. This performance envelope lies somewhere below those of the XQ-5 equipped with the MA20F engine. It is therefore the purpose of this report to analyze this need, establish the boundaries of such an intermediate performance envelope, and present the results of investigations attempting to fill these requirements. Since the need for such a target vehicle is immediate, it is advisable to modify an existing vehicle in lieu of embarking on a completely new drone development program. Towards this end, the performance envelopes and associated endurance curves of the XQ-5 drone when equipped with various engines have been calculated, and the results compared to the desired characteristics.
