SYNTHESIS OF LMH-2.

Abstract

Beryllium hydride in purities up to 87.5 wt.% was obtained from the disproportionation of ClBeH:OEt2 in dimethylsulfide at 25 C. The purity of the CBH disporportionation product obtained in 1,2-dichloroethane was improved to 66.3 wt.% BeH2 over a previous value of 34.1%. Under certain conditions the ratio of active H to residual Cl reached 143/1 corresponding to a purity of 95 wt.% BeH2 based on residual BeCl2 as the only contaminant. The products were amorphous to X-ray. Retained ether remains a major contaminant. Complete removal of retained ether by thermal means could not be accomplished without causing some cleavage. Chemical methods are being investigated to displace the residual ether. (Author)
