FORWARD AREA REFUELING SYSTEMS.

Abstract

Refueling concepts, refueling requirements, and two new items of refueling equipment were evaluated during combat airmobile operations in the Republic of Vietnam. The standard POL pumping equipment, filter/water separators, and bulk storage containers currently available through normal supply channels are adequate to support pre-stock points and staging area operations if a sufficient number are authorized within the aviation battalions (airmobile) and they are properly used and maintained. Owing to the limited fuel discharge rate from the RLT, this item is of limited value in airmobile assault refueling operations. The LAARS was not designed for field operation. Although the Chinook helicopters were being used in country, they were completely committed to combat operations and not available to be used in evaluating the airborne refueler (flying tanker) concept for which the LAARS was designed. Immediate action mst be taken to assign MOS-qualified personnel to fill the many vacant TOE and attached POL spaces authorized the non-divisional airmobile companies (light) in Vietnam. Additional pumping equipment, filter/water separators, and bulk storage containers are required to operate the POL pre-stock points more efficiently and to support assault staging area refueling operations.
