THE PROPERTIES OF A NEW ACRYLIC MONOMER,

Abstract

The kinetics of free radical homopolymerizations and copolymerizations ofNFPA in solution have been measured and the corresponding rate constants and reactivity ratios have been determined. These rate studies and characterizations of resulting polymers have resulted in rather complete descriptions of the polymerization of NFPA. Poly NFPA is a rubbery polymer having physical and dilute solution properties sililar to those of other alkyl arcylates. Copolymers of NFPA with other acrylic monomers containing hydroxy, carboxy, epoxy, anhydride, and acid groups were prepared in solution. These functional groups were used as handles for crosslinking the copolymers through difunctional reagents. Significant and somewhat expected changes in physical properties were observed as these comonomers were incorporated into NFPA polymers. Molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity relationships for polymers of NFPA have been defined. (Author)
