RESEARCH ON THE RESPONSE OF REINFORCED SOLID PROPELLANTS.

Abstract

Research on the structural behavior of wire-reinforced propellants is reported. Values for certain of the orthotropic constants have been determined experimentally. A difference of moduli in tension and compression has been observed. Portions of the yield surface are presented. Thick wall propellant grains were internally instrumented and subjected to internal pressure. One of the grains tested contained three different types of wire, wound with increasing wire modulus towards the outer diameter of the grain. The modified strain distribution is reported. A new concept in grain design has been utilized in the fabrication of a grain specifically for deep submergence applications. This grain consists of a perforated reinforced core with a helically would outer layer. (Author)
