PREPARATION OF HYPERGOLIC LIQUID PROPELLANT COMBINATIONS.

Abstract

This report presents the results of experimental and analytical evaluations conducted during a two-phase program conducted with the O2/H2 and OF2/CH4-C2H6 propellant combinations. The first phase demonstrated hypergolic reaction between nominally 1500 F fuel-rich reaction products from a low mixture ratio O2/H2 catalytic reaction and additional oxygen. The demonstrations were conducted with gaseousand liquid-phase reactants, both at ambient pressure, and in a simulated altitude environment (0.0003 psia) and resulted in hypergolic reaction. The second phase, which utilized OF2/CH4-C2H6 propellants, was divided into three tasks: (1) catalyst evaluations, (2) catalyst selection, and (3) ignition delay demonstrations. During the first task, selected catalysts having potential for promoting the liquid phase OF2/CH4-C2H6 reaction were evaluated. Selected catalysts were compared during Task 2 using reactor hardware. The final task was conducted in a manner similar to that previously used with O2/H2 propellants. Experiments were successfully conducted with gaseous- and liquid-phase reactants, both at atmospheric pressure, and at an environmental pressure of 0.0003 psia. The hot-gas temperature necessary for satisfactory ignition was established as approximately 500 F.
