INORGANIC HALOGEN OXIDIZERS.

Abstract

A stable mass cracking pattern of Florox (C1F3O) has been obtained. No parent peak was observed but intense peaks for the key m/e values corresponding to C1F0(+) and C1F2O(+) were obtained. Several possible synthetic routes to unknown chlorosyl fluoride (FC10) were investigated. Trace quantities of Compound C, suspected to be FC10, were found on occasion. Hydrolytic studies of anionic interhalogen fluoride species were initiated as another method of forming FC10. A new, rapid method was developed for the synthesis of chlorine nitrate (C1NO3). The procedure utilizes C1F and HNO and the reaction proceeds rapidly at temperatures above -112 C. The vapor pressure/temperature equation for C1NO3 from -80 to 26 C is described by log p(mm) = 7.9892 - 1509.4/T, The fluorination of bromine nitrate has yielded a solid product which is thought to be the FNO2 complex of a desired BrF O species. These experiments would be facilitated by a better preparative route to BrNO3. Some effort has been directed to this end. The solid obtained from the reaction of Cl2O and AsF5 has been found to be principally ClO2(+)AsF6(-). This was confirmed by the preparation of an authentic sample and the observed identity of the powder X-ray diffraction patterns, infrared spectra, and chemical reactions. (Author)
