A SYMPOSIUM ON NUCLEAR CHINA, TRENDS AND PROSPECTS.

Abstract

Representatives of government policy-making organizations concerned with Communist China met with interested and knowledgeable representatives of universities and research organizations 11-13 December 1964, at the University of California, San Diego. The purpose of this symposium were to exchange and integrate information, to define areas of agreement and disagreement, and, where possible, to draw meaningful conclusions and make recommendations therefrom. The main topics of discussion were (1) the nature of Communist China today in economic, military, social, and ideological areas; (2) the probable nature of Communist China, in these same areas, 5 to 10 years hence; and (3) present and future policy alternatives available to the United States. The introduction defines the purposes and topics more fully, describes the method employed to achieve the purposes, and summarizes the extent to which they were achieved. A transcript of the symposium is included. (Author)
