DATA REDUCTION REPORT ON ATHENA FLIGHT NO. 045 (MISSILE D023-QQ01). PART II - OPTICAL DATA LAUNCHED 10 JUNE 1966.
Abstract
This report describes the procedures and presents the results of the optical signature data reduction by the BMRS Data Center for Athena Flight Number 045 (Missile D023-QQ01). Part I of this report (a separate document) presents the radar signature data for this flight. No interim report was published on this flight and the data collection results have been incorporated in this report. The payload was a Mark 12 decoy and was the first of a series to be flown as a follow-up to the 'P' type payloads. The primary purpose of the test was to determine the effect of nose radius on body RCS during early re-entry with secondary objectives of wake onset altitudes, wake RCS characteristics, velocity-position history, and mass injection effects on body motion. Marginal data were obtained by the optical instrumentation which supported this mission because of the extensive cloud cover.
