Heat Resistant Explosives, XXIV. Selected Properties an Preparation of 1, 4, 5, 8-Tetranitronaphthalene (TNN-1458).

Abstract

Some of the physical properties of 1,4,5,8-tetranitronaphthalene (TNN-1458) and methods for its preparation have been reinvestigated. It was found that, contrary to some reports in the literature, the material is high melting and exhibits considerable stability at temperatures of 280-300 C. A procedure for the bench-scale preparation of one half pound of pure TNN-1458 is described. Relatively inexpensive starting materials may result in this compound being less costly than other explosives which are stable in this temperature range. (Author)
