SYNTHESIS AND PROPERTIES OF BIS(2-FLUORO-2,2-DINITROETHYL) ETHER AND THE LOWER BIS(2-FLUORO-2,2-DINITROETHYL) POLYOXYMETHYLENES,

Abstract

In the series, CF(NO2)2-CH2-O(-CH2-O-)n-CH2-CF(NO2)2, two oxymethylene homologs of FEFO (n=1) with N=2 and N=3 were prepared from 2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroethanol and formaldehyde in sulfuric acid. Not unexpectedly, they were less thermally stable than FEFO. The synthesis of the lowest member of this series, bis(2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroethyl) ether, n=0, from bis(2-nitroethyl) ether by oxidative nitration and aqueous fluorination of the product is also described. Vacuum Thermal Stability tests indicate that it possesses greater thermal stability than FEFO. (Author)
