GENERALIZED AERODYNAMIC STUDIES FOR A MEDIUM RANGE INTERCEPTOR,

Abstract

This report presents the analysis and result of a generalized performance study and a generalized configuration study. The performance study defines the effects of various aerodynamic, propulsion system and mission performance characteristics on the design of the Medium Range Interceptor. The above characteristics are used to evaluate a fuel weight parameter and, ultimately, to determine airplane size. The generalized configuration study analyzes the differences between three basic configurations; the tailed, tailless and canard types. The study evaluates the variation with changing stability and control requirements of the trimmed lift-to-drag ratio for each of the configuration types. The effects of zero-lift pitching moment, movable ballast and retractable destabilizing surfaces on the trimmed characteristics of these configurations is also evaluated. The results of the studies indicate that an airplane of moderate size can be built to fulfill the requirements of the Medium Range Interceptor Weapons System.
