OPERATION MASTIFF, FROM 1ST INFANTRY DIVISION

Abstract

On 210645H February 1966, MACV directed Operation MASTIFF commenced under control of the 1st Infantry Division. The two brigade (reinf) operation was launched to locate and destroy VC forces and base camps in the vicinity of the MICHELIN Rubber Planation. The plan required two brigades to operate in assigned zones to destroy VC forces which were trapped by the SAIGON River to their rear. A forward division artillery fire support base would be established in the vicinity of RUNG CAY. The operation would be conducted in four phases, incorporating movements of assault units by helicopter and tactical motor convoys to the area of operations.
