IONIC FLUORINE CHEMISTRY.

Abstract

The reaction of chlorine pentafluoride with cesium fluoride to form cesium hexafluorochlorate has been investigated, and results obtained during an earlier Olin-sponsored study have been confirmed. The weight gain of the cesium fluoride and the high ratio of F to Cl in the product (as indicated by elemental analysis) permit calculations which suggest a composition consisting of CsClF6, CsClF4, CsHF2 and unreacted CsF. Instrumental methods of analysis are being applied in the effort to establish characteristic patterns of the ClF(6) anion. Preliminary results from the reaction of NOF(ClF5) with CsF indicate that this may be a way to produce product free of CsClF4 when ClF5 free of ClF3 is used. (Author)
