SUBIC. SUBMARINE TACTICAL COMMAND AND CONTROL SYSTEMS RESEARCH.

Abstract

The research is being concentrated in four principal areas: (1) Submarine Attack Control Systems Research: This work involves laboratory simulation of operator/computer/CRT display systems. A number of concepts based on a three-scope display system in the search, approach, attack and kill phases of a submarine mission are discussed. The research on man/computer/display systems at the University of Connecticut is described. (2) Submarine At-Sea Computer/CRT Displays: The updating of the first generation SUBIC At-Sea DDP-24 system is reviewed and the development of a new advanced system based on the UNIVAC CP-890 general purpose computer is described. (3) Oceanography and Environmental Research: Studies and results of modeling the acoustic environment as an input to tactical decision making are discussed. In particular the use of acoustic environmental data in the PERMIT/BLUEGILL sonar tests is described. Studies of the statistical description of the sonar self-noise environment are briefly reviewed. (4) Information Processing: Theoretical work at Yale University is reviewed in its relationship to New Submarine Sonar concepts. Feasibility studies (under SUBIC subcontract) in new technologies as they may affect and guide submarine command and control systems research are included. The report includes a discussion of the approach being taken, the orientation of specific aspects of the program to current Navy sonar programs, and an assessment of the progress being made in relation to overall program objectives and level of effort.
